PGY1/PGY2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy Pharmacy Residency

PGY1 Purpose: PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

PGY2 Purpose: PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Features

The PGY1/PGY2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy Residency is a 24-month program that develops strong clinical pharmacy skills during the PGY1 year and builds upon that foundation during the PGY2 year. During the PGY1 year, residents will complete all requirements of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Froedtert Hospital while being introduced to the medication-use safety and policy practice area through rotations, error review, committee assignments, administrative responsibilities, and projects. Residents will work closely with program leadership to select rotations in a variety of practice settings with an emphasis on complex, high-risk, and high-cost medication therapy.

During the PGY2 year, the resident will assist in driving many of the medication-use safety and policy initiatives across Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network. The resident will develop advanced skills in medication safety, formulary management, drug information and medication-use policy within an academic health system. Error review and prevention, safety culture promotion, regulatory compliance, medication utilization and quality improvement will be areas of focus for the resident during the PGY2 year. Through a variety of rotations and activities, residents will gain experience in the areas of pharmacy operations, drug shortage management, informatics, teaching and precepting, budgeting, analytics, medical writing, research, and scholarly publication. The program is designed to prepare the resident to practice in a variety of health care settings including health-system pharmacy, academia, industry, or population health.

PGY1 positions are available in acute care focus (12 residents), ambulatory care focus (4 residents), PGY1 community-based (1 resident), PGY1/PGY2 Health-system Pharmacy and Leadership (4 residents), PGY1/PGY2 Medication Use Safety and Policy (4 residents), PGY1&2 Pharmacy Informatics (2 resident). Additionally, three PGY1 resident positions are available at Froedtert Menomonee Falls, one of Froedtert's affiliated community hospitals.
