The goal of the Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Practice Residency is to provide pharmacy residents with opportunities to develop the fundamental skills necessary to excel in the specialty pharmacy environment.
The residency program is based at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This premier specialty pharmacy location offers a variety of patient care services to support patients who are managing chronic life-threatening or rare conditions, including cancer, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, infertility, and chronic inflammatory conditions, among others. The clinical pharmacists at this site work closely with health care professionals, patient care advocates, insurance verification specialists, and patients to meet the needs of medication therapy. In addition, residents will gain insights on pharmacy practice management issues that can affect the delivery of care for patients receiving specialty medications.
The residency is offered in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. This partnership provides the resident with opportunities to serve as a graduate mentor with student organizations, participate in advocacy events, administer vaccinations, and develop the academic skills necessary to serve as an educator and preceptor. As part of this residency program, the resident will actively engage in educating Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy staff and university students while completing a Mastery of Teaching Program through the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
