Residency Showcase Program Listings

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Bethesda North Hospital builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) educational outcomes, leading to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. After successfully completing the PGY1 residency program, graduates will be well-rounded, competent clinical pharmacists able to provide patient-focused pharmaceutical care in the hospital setting. Graduates of the program are well-qualified to seek employment as clinical pharmacists or postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Required rotations include Orientation, Internal Medicine, Medical Surgical Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, General Cardiology, Population Health, and Infectious Diseases. Electives include Medical Oncology, Malignant Hematology, Clinical Informatics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Cardiology (Heart Failure Service), Neurovascular Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Heart Failure Clinic, Pharmacogenomics, and Faculty Medical Center Internal Medicine Clinic. Required learning experiences may also be repeated as elective rotations at a more advanced level. Other electives may be taken into consideration depending on the resident's learning goals and the site's ability to provide a qualified rotation. Residents have the option to participate in the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program and mentor IPPE/APPE students at Bethesda North Hospital. Unique longitudinal rotation activities that span the 12-month program include book club, Pharmacy Grand Rounds presentation, and pharmacy newsletter editor. Residents are required to complete a research project for presentation at national and regional conferences and a manuscript suitable for publication. Staffing requirement is every third weekend with an additional four-hour IV room shift every third Friday (offset from weekend requirement).
