Program Overview: • This PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency will provide the skills necessary for the practical application of pharmacy informatics and automated technology assessment principles in integrated healthcare systems. The resident will be involved with every aspect in the management of pharmacy data applications, data support and analysis for pharmacy and medical center leadership, pharmacy technology assessment, implementation, and maintenance. • The resident will gain experience with Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), Computerized Prescriber Order Entry (CPOE), Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA), medication storage and retrieval devices (Omnicell®), and medication dispensing robotics (ScriptPro®). • Other responsibilities include conducting outcomes research and precepting pharmacy trainees (students and residents) with informatics related projects. • Education will include formal informatics training and hands-on application of principles. Work activities will encompass the VASDHS, and experiential rotations on a regional/national level

SCHEDULE OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES:
First rotation: Orientation to our medical center, pharmacy service and residency program. PGY2 residents who completed a PGY1 residency at VA San Diego will undergo an abbreviated orientation program. Specifically, they will be excused from selected components of the medical center (New Employee Orientation) and pharmacy service orientation.
Remaining required rotations are longitudinal and scheduled such that fundamentals are taught during the first half of the residency so that residents can practice independently by the end of the residency year. Resident is to actively participate in projects of increasing complexity as the residency year progresses.
Elective learning experiences will take place during the 3rd and 4th quarters of the residency year.

PROVISION OF CARE – PHARMACY SERVICE
- Pharmacy services provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Decentralized unit-dose service with Barcode Medication Administration, IV Additive Service, Automated Dispensing Systems, Physician Order Entry and Automated Prescription Filling Our Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacists, Inpatient Clinical Pharmacists, and Clinical Specialists provide a wide range of pharmaceutical care services to veterans in the inpatient an...d outpatient settings.
OUR STAFF AND PRECEPTORS
- 75 pharmacists serve as preceptors to our resident trainees. Most have greater than 5 years of experience with serving as a preceptor to residents. Many are Board Certified as Pharmacotherapy Specialists (BCPS), Oncology Pharmacists (BCOP), Psychiatric Pharmacists (BCPP), Ambulatory Care Pharmacists (BCACP), Critical Care Pharmacists (BCCCP), Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (BCIDP) and Geriatric Pharmacists (BCGP). More than half possess Scopes of Practices which allow for prescriptive authority
OUR TEACHING PROGRAM
