Description
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program – Acute Care Setting was first accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 1989 and most recently re-accredited in 2021. The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of institutional practice with an emphasis on the delivery of pharmaceutical care and clinical services. PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
The 52-week postgraduate training experience is composed of a variety of required and elective rotations, as follows:
Orientation (6 weeks)
Foundational Skills - point of care (2 weeks)
Foundational Skills - staffing (2 weeks)
Surgical Service Line (TICU, Neuro-ICU or CTICU) (4-5 weeks)
Intensive Care Service Line (MICU, TICU, or CTICU ) (4-5 weeks)
Transitions of Care Service Line (Heart Failure, or Abdominal Transplant) (4-5 weeks)
Infectious Disease (4-5 weeks)
Internal Medicine (4-5 weeks)
Administration (Clinical or Practice Management) (4-5 weeks)
Medication Error Reporting (concentrated)
Clinical Precepting (concentrated)
Pharmacokinetics and On-Call (longitudinal)
Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing (longitudinal)
Pharmacy Management/Leadership & Professional Development (longitudinal)
The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. The required rotations above can be repeated and tailored to resident interests as an elective, or the resident may select from elective rotations: Emergency Medicine, Oncology (inpatient/clinic), Advanced Heart Failure (inpatient/clinic), Internal Medicine Clinic, Anticoagulation Clinic, Addiction Medicine, or Transplant Services (abdominal or heart). The program also offers a Teaching Certificate Program with affiliated University is optional.

Applicants must have graduated from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and must be eligible for Pennsylvania licensure.

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is an academic medical center serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area. AGH is the flagship tertiary care hospital in the Allegheny Health Network (AHN).
The AGH Department of Pharmacy provides on-site outpatient pharmacy services and 24-hour inpatient comprehensive pharmacy services utilizing a decentralized, computerized unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture programs in a recently remodeled pharmacy. Other pharmacy services include drug information, computerized inventory control and procurement systems, integrated drug use review, and quality improvement.
The AGH Pharmacy Residency Programs consists of 20 residents within nine-different residency programs. PGY1 programs include Acute Care and Ambulatory Focused residencies. PGY2 programs include Ambulatory Care, Cardiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology residencies. A combined PGY1-PGY2 Health-System Ph...armacy Administration Residency Program with MPH at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is also available. Residents receive a stipend of $48,400 for PGY1 and $52,000 for PGY2 with medical, prescription, dental, vision, disability, and life-insurance benefits. Thirteen paid days off are provided during the residency year outside of days to attend approved conferences.
