Residency Showcase Program Listings

This PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital was established in 1996 and was most recently re-accredited by ASHP in 2021. The program emphasizes the integrated approach to the application of advanced clinical skills. The PGY2 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experiences and knowledge, and incorporating both in the into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in critical care pharmacy.

• Infectious Diseases (1 month)
• Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU (1 month)
• Neurosurgery/Neurology ICU ( 1 month)
• Emergency Medicine (1 month)
• Evening Critical Care (1 month)
• Electives (2-3 months)
• Pharmacokinetics & On-Call (Longitudinal)
• Inpatient Pharmacy/Emergency Department Staffing (Longitudinal)
• Code Response (Longitudinal)
• Practice Management & Practice Leadership (Longitudinal)

The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. Various elective rotations are available to provide flexibility in pursuing individual goals. The resident may choose to complete an elective rotation in one or more of the core rotation practice areas or choose another practice area. Examples of other elective rotations include further concentrated learning experiences in the core rotations or in burn unit, transplantation, nutrition support, or heart failure. An optional Teaching Certificate Program through an affiliated University School of Pharmacy is also available.

Applications will be accepted through January 2, 2026. Application materials should include

• Curriculum vitae
• Three professional letters of recommendation
• Academic transcript

An on-site interview is also required. The residency commences by July 1.

Applicants must be eligible for graduation or have graduated from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and must be licensed or eligible for Pennsylvania pharmacist licensure.  Information on Pennsylvania pharmacist licensure eligibility can be found at:

About Allegheny General Hospital

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is an academic medical center serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area. The hospital annually admits more than 24,000 patients, and has nearly 800 physicians and approximately 5,000 employees that share AGH's commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education and research. AGH is the flagship tertiary care hospital in the Allegheny Health Network (AHN). The AGH Department of Pharmacy provides on-site outpatient pharmacy services and 24-hour inpatient comprehensive pharmacy services utilizing a decentralized, computerized unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture programs in a recently remodeled pharmacy. Other pharmacy services include drug information, computerized inventory control and procurement systems, integrated drug use review, and quality improvement. The AGH Pharmacy Residency Programs consists of 20 residents within nine-different residency programs. PGY1 programs include Acute Care and Ambulatory Focused residencies. PGY2 programs include Ambulatory Care, Cardiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology residencies. A combined PGY1-PGY2 Health-System Ph...armacy Administration Residency Program with MPH at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is also available. Residents receive a stipend of $48,400 for PGY1 and $52,000 for PGY2 with medical, prescription, dental, vision, disability, and life-insurance benefits. Thirteen paid days off are provided during the residency year outside of days to attend approved conferences.
