The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) is a 52-week program. Residents gain experience and independent practice with a variety of disease states and conditions and a diverse range of patients' medication treatments and health-related needs. This program follows the guidelines and accreditation standards of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The JCMC PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. Required rotations include orientation, cardiology, critical care (medicine or trauma-surgery), infectious diseases, medicine (family or internal), management and pediatrics. Required longitudinal learning experiences include professional development, continuing education, professional development, formulary review, medication use evaluation, research and staffing. Elective rotations will be tailored to each resident's interests, and may include critical care medicine, inpatient psychiatry, ambulatory care, emergency medicine, family medicine, infectious diseases, inpatient or outpatient oncology, internal medicine, precepting, and trauma-surgical critical care.

Johnson City Medical Center is part of the Ballad Health system caring for patients in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Viriginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Western North Carolina. We are a 445-bed tertiary referral center that is a Level One Trauma Center and is a community teaching hospital located in Johnson City, TN. Additionally, we have the region's children's hospital in the form of Niswonger Children's Hospital which houses a Level Three NICU and ten bed PICU.
