Pensacola, Florida, The PGY1 pharmacy residency experience at West Florida Healthcare (WFH) offers several core experiences in orientation, consult service, adult internal medicine I and II, critical care, and pediatrics. Longitudinal experiences include infectious diseases, staffing, pharmacy administration, and research project. Numerous elective experiences such as antimicrobial stewardship, cardiology, critical care II, oncology, pediatrics II, psychiatry, and rehabilitative medicine allow for residents to individualize their overall learning experiences.
Our supportive, close-knit workplace means a friendly, caring, patient-centered environment with one-on-one daily interactions with preceptors and medical staff. Each resident has his/her own personal desk in a spacious office. Residents also receive a personal laptop with remote access to all of the necessary clinical tools. The PGY1 program at West Florida Healthcare offers flexibility, while providing a strong foundation in all areas of pharmacy practice.
The pharmacy resident will be an active member of the healthcare team with opportunities to influence medication use and safety practices. In addition, each resident will have opportunities to be involved with formulary management, policy development, and research presentation at the annual ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Florida Residency Conference. For those seeking a career in academia, there is robust involvement with students from several affiliated colleges of pharmacy throughout the year in addition to the optional teaching certificate program. Our residency program utilizes Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). In order to apply for the PGY1 pharmacy residency at WFH, we do not require anything beyond the standard PhORCAS requirements. As part of the selection process, an interview will be required. Finally, incoming residents must be eligible for licensure or already licensed as a pharmacist in the state of Florida.
