Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 ambulatory care residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in ambulatory care.
The Ambulatory Care residency is designed to deepen the resident’s understanding of both practice management and clinical skills necessary to successfully integrate ambulatory care pharmacy services into the healthcare system. The program emphasizes chronic disease management in the primary care setting while also allowing for experience in multiple specialty clinic areas. Service evaluation along with creation/enhancement, and third-party reimbursement will be focus areas in each setting in which the resident rotates. The resident will have the opportunity to teach PharmD students and PGY1 residents in both didactic and experiential situations.
A combination of monthly block and longitudinal experiences will be utilized. Some of the required experiences include pharmacy orientation, primary care, clinical management and administration, longitudinal clinic, and staffing. Elective experience options include, but are not limited to infectious disease, emergency medicine, medication safety, cardiology, and hematology/oncology.
