Residency Program OverviewProgram PurposePGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Program: The purpose of the PGY-1 pharmacy residency program is to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.
This manual has been developed for the pharmacy residents of Howard University Hospital (HUH) PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Programs to provide information on policies, procedures, benefits and other elements that may directly affect a resident completing our program. Please read the manual and keep it for future reference. Questions regarding the residency manual may be addressed with the Residency Program Director (RPD). Note: Howard University Hospital may revise its policies and procedures at any time whenever deemed necessary. Residents will be informed of changes accordingly.

Program Description
Howard University Hospital provides an ASHP-accredited Post-Graduate Year One (PGY-1) pharmacy residency program. Residents pursuing a PGY-1 pharmacy residency are provided the opportunity to further enhance their clinical skills beyond their professional pharmacy degree program. The 12-month residency program enhances general competencies in managing medication-use systems and supports optimal pharmacotherapy for patients in various care settings and with a broad range of disease states.
The goal of the residency program is to create independent pharmacy practitioners who have the skills necessary to practice pharmacy in a variety of practice settings. Residents work towards this goal through the following set of skill developments:

•Instill confidence and improve leadership skills by expanding knowledge base and through education of other health-care professionals and patients.
•Promote professional development through continued education and self-evaluation
