The UCSD Health PGY1 Pharmacy - Ambulatory Care Focused Residency Program focuses on direct patient care in the ambulatory care and transitional care environment, with elective opportunities available across the spectrum of care. Additionally, the residents will receive individually tailored training in research and teaching opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on providing excellent pharmaceutical care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team. The resident will gain experience in the therapeutic management of patients in both the primary care and specialty care settings, addressing chronic diseases including but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, as well as transplant, anticoagulation disorders, and HIV/AIDS and additional clinical specialty areas.

UC San Diego Pharmacy offers progressive clinical pharmacy services with over 200 employees, 15 PGY1 pharmacy practice residents, and 8 PGY2 specialty pharmacy residents. Residents serve as members of interdisciplinary teams in medicine, intensive care, administration, ambulatory care, and specialty clinics. Additional clinical rotations may be elected, based upon areas of interest, with over 25 electives available. Residents receive training in teaching and research methodology, performance improvement, and medication safety. Residents serve as preceptors for fourth-year clinical pharmacy students in core rotations and as facilitators for third year students in Therapeutics Conferences for an entire quarter. Residents also participate in longitudinal disease state management clinics.
