UK launched a dual PGY1/PGY2 residency in Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (SPAL) in July 2018. This program encompasses a two-year experience that combines the well-rounded clinical experience of UK’s PGY1 community based residency program at UK Specialty Pharmacy with the rotational and longitudinal management and leadership experiences during the PGY2 SPAL residency year. Graduates of the program will be experts in the clinical, operational, and business aspects of a health system specialty pharmacy. Resident are encouraged to develop communication and writing skills by teaching and precepting Pharm.D. students and conducting research and other scholarly activities.
UK Healthcare is a 1040 bed tertiary care center located in the heart of the Bluegrass in Lexington, KY. It serves as a primary care center for the citizens of Kentucky (#1 hospital in KY by US News & World Report) and includes services such as a Level 1 Trauma Center, TJC certified comprehensive stroke and epilepsy centers, an ECMO Center of Excellence, and active kidney, liver, heart, and lung transplant centers. The Department of Pharmacy is composed of over 300 pharmacists within practice settings ranging from Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Transplant to Infusion Centers, Retail Pharmacy, and Specialty Pharmacy. The specialty pharmacy is URAC and ACHC accredited and was the first health-system pharmacy in the country to achieve URAC Rare Disease Pharmacy Center of Excellence distinction. The specialty pharmacy is located off campus with state-of-the-art automation and is licensed in almost 50 states. The specialty pharmacy team services over 40 therapeutic categories and collaborates with over 50 clinics. Pharmacy service integration across the enterprise provides pharmacy residents countless opportunities to advance patient care and facilitate service growth.

University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency Program (CPRP)
The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency Program (CPRP), established in 2001, is dedicated to developing community practitioners who are providers of direct patient care services and innovators in the advancement of community pharmacy practice. The program will equip the residents to: provide direct patient care in community pharmacy settings, effectively communicate with/educate student pharmacists, pharmacists, patients, and other healthcare professionals, manage advanced patient care practices, be a leader and role model for pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, and student pharmacists in advancing the profession of pharmacy, and utilize core management skills to effectively operate a community pharmacy.
