The KCVA Medical Center currently provides services to over 55,000 of the veterans that reside in the Kansas City metro area. KCVA is a tertiary 1B complexity teaching Medical Center that serves as a referral center for VISN 15 Medical Centers in Leavenworth, Topeka, and Wichita, Kansas and Columbia, Missouri.
Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services focusing on primary care, mental health and specialty services are available at the at the Kansas City campus and 10 Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Missouri and Kansas. Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners play an integral role by enhancing care to all patients in the Kansas City VA healthcare system.
Pharmacy Services The Pharmacy Service provides 24-hour coverage seven days a week. Patient care is provided by a staff of more than 100 pharmacists, residents, and technicians practicing in the ambulatory, inpatient and outpatient care settings.
Clinical Pharmacy Services: The clinical pharmacist and pharmacy technician staff provides pharmaceutical care to veterans using a systematic process designed to ensure patients are educated and drug therapy is monitored. Pharmacists with scopes of practice are positioned on acute care multidisciplinary teams and ambulatory primary and specialty care areas to collaborate with teams and conduct medication management activities.
Informatics: The Pharmacy service works to develop and enhance technology that improves patient care and enhances work flow for both clinical and distributive functions of the pharmacy through use of the electronic medical record (VistA/CPRS) as well as outside vendors. Through incorporation of technology and clinical decision support practices, pharmacists and technicians are able to focus on developing reports that enhance the ability to provide population based patient centric care.
Leadership: The pharmacy leadership team includes 20+ members comprised of program managers, supervisors, associate chiefs and chief positions throughout operational and clinical areas to enhance the VA veteran and pharmacy employee’s experience. The team is responsible for overall functions of the department, developing strategic goals to align with the VA mission to prioritize patient safety and high-quality veteran care.
Operational Pharmacy Services: The operational pharmacist and pharmacy technician staff are in the inpatient and outpa-tient pharmacies to provide care throughout the acute care, clinic and outpatient settings. The pharmacists manage work-load activities and provide recommendations to KCVA clinicians in the medication and consult adjudication process.
Residency program
The Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency is a comprehensive 52-week program offered by the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Our pharmacy department boasts a robust administrative team with expertise in inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory care, and pharmacoeconomic leadership. The resident will gain valuable experi-ence in multidisciplinary collaboration, expansion of services, and pharmacy workload, fiscal and human resource management in a high reliability organization. The resident will participate in activities to ensure compliance with reg-ulatory standards including VHA Directives, Joint Commission, and USP 795/797/800. The resident will conduct evalua-tion and adjustment of processes as part of patient safety initiatives and service recovery. In addition, residents will longitudinally monitor patients’ progress through the inpatient and ambulatory care clinical rotations. The resident will benefit from mentorship and guidance from leaders within the pharmacy department, medical center, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 15, and national VHA.
Benefits
Benefits include health , annual leave (vacation), days off for illness/appointments/ family care and paid federal holidays. The annual stipend is $53, 460.
Eligibility • Applicants must be a graduate of an American Council of Pharmaceutical Education accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D. degree and complete a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency. • Applicants must be U.S. citizens – a requirement to be employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Medical Center is a tertiary care hospital that serves as a referral center for the Kansas VA Medical Centers in Leavenworth, Topeka, and Wichita as well as the Columbia, Missouri VA Medical Center. This integrated health care system is dedicated to providing quality health care to veterans of Mid-America.
In addition to acute care medicine and surgery services, the Medical Center has Primary Care services for all veteran patients. The Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) housed in Overland Park & Paola, Kansas, and in Belton, Cameron, Excelsior Springs, Kansas City, Nevada, & Warrensburg, Missouri provide an extension of these services to veterans in rural areas. Sub-specialists or Specialty Care is also available to patients for evaluation and management of endocrine, pulmonary, gastroenterology, nephrology, cardiology, hematology/oncology, ID and geriatric disorders. Clinical Pharmacy Specialists play an integral role by enhancing care to all patients at the KCVAMC.
As a principal teaching hospital, the KCVAMC is affili...ated with the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Pharmacy and the University of Kansas Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Ambulatory Care The clinic pharmacy staff provides pharmaceutical services for primary care and specialty care clinic patients. Pharmacists in these areas provide drug information, observations on patient response to therapy, and appropriate recommendations regarding treatment alternatives or additional interventions to maximize patient care outcomes. The pharmacists in these clinics function as mid-level practitioners and work under a scope of practice.
The decentralized inpatient pharmacy staff provides pharmaceutical care to veterans using a systematic process designed to ensure patients are educated and drug therapy is monitored. New orders are evaluated with attention to drug dosing, drug interactions, and drug allergies. Pharmacists’ recommendations are communicated on patient care rounds or directly to the medical, surgical, psychiatric, and critical care teams. Drug distribution is accomplished through centralized unit dose and IV admixture services.
