IU Health Candidate PGY1 Community Based Pharmacy Residency Program emphasizes the development of advanced knowledge and application of pharmacotherapeutics in outpatient and ambulatory care settings. This program cultivates the skills of practice management and education and the professional attitudes of self-evaluation, self-improvement, and accountability. The successful resident will demonstrate a desire to learn, sincere interest in the profession, and dedication to achieving all outcomes of the residency.

The ASHP accreditation standard provides criteria that every program must meet in order to receive and maintain accreditation. Although the standard requires experiences in certain core areas, there is room for concentration in a practice area and for additional experiences. Our program includes developing a core skill set in understanding third party payers and their impact on implementing care plans. In addition, focus will be placed on project-based research and team functioning, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction.

Indiana University Health’s Academic Health Center provides a customizable residency experience in a multi-hospital (2 adult, 1 pediatric) and expansive ambulatory care setting. Required rotations include administration, ambulatory care, access/affordability, internal medicine, information systems, and specialty clinical rotations. Residents staff outpatient operations in our hospital based retail pharmacy. A research project is presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residents Conference.

Residency Completion Requirements

• Earn an “ACHR” status on 80% of PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Objectives
• Successfully create or update a treatment protocol (CDTM)
• Successfully complete a Residency Project Manuscript
• Successfully complete a platform presentation at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference
• Successfully develop and present a Business Plan for a new or enhanced service
• Successfully complete a Grand Rounds presentation
• Complete 52 weeks of residency
• Successfully complete one rotation in all required areas
• Create and deliver at least one in service presentation and one clinical compendium presentation
• Successfully complete a minor QI project
