Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is an academic teaching hospital that is integrated with the UC San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The purpose of this program is to build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Our program residents will be eligible for board certification and be eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The residency centers on the development of knowledge, attitude, and skills needed to provide pharmaceutical care in pediatrics. Each resident will rotate in the areas of General Medicine/Surgery, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Cardiac Intensive Care (CVICU) Hematology/Oncology, Pharmacy Administration, UC San Diego electives and other chosen electives.
Longitudinal rotations include: Research Project, Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) activities (writing and presenting Drug Monographs for Formulary Review and Medication Use Evaluations), Central Pharmacy Operations, Ambulatory Care Clinics (Severe Asthma and Cystic Fibrosis) and a Teaching Certificate program.
The residents’ goal will be to achieve optimal medication therapy outcomes as part of a multidisciplinary health care team. A centralized pharmacy provides an organized and well-equipped environment for the performance of pharmaceutical functions (storage, compounding, computer order verification, dispensing, distribution, drug information resources, etc.) and per...sonnel that staffs a satellite pharmacy in operation on the Hematology/Oncology Care Area.
Clinical Pharmacy Services are provided to all of RCHSD patients. Decentralized clinical pharmacists are assigned to the following areas: NICU, PICU, CVICU, Medical/Surgical, and Hematology/Oncology. A clinical pharmacist is also assigned to the pharmacokinetics service seven days a week. Clinical pharmacists participate on physician rounds to aid in the assessment, and monitoring of patient drug regimens. Our pharmacists respond to codes and traumas. Our pharmacists are also charged with providing continuing education presentations to the other pharmacists and health-care providers at RCHSD. The clinical pharmacists are a resource to other pharmacists and the medical and hospital staff. The pharmacy has a dedicated research pharmacist to oversee investigational protocols involving medication use. The pharmacy provides clinical pharmacy services to support both inpatient transplant patients and the outpatient transplant clinic, cystic fibrosis and severe asthma clinic.
Education and growth are important components to the success of the pharmacy department and we stay committed to offering learning opportunities for all pharmacy staff members, residents, and students.
