HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood is excited to offer a 12-month PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program.  During this time, residents are involved in high-quality patient-centered care, medication use policy, leadership and practice management, project management, education of healthcare providers and trainees, and medical emergencies. The purpose of the PGY1-Pharmacy Residency is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for the medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, who are eligible for board certification as well as postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. 

A solid and excellent clinical and operational foundation is developed through robust clinical experiences in areas such as internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious disease, antimicrobial stewardship, teaching and clinical research. In addition, dynamic leadership and medication safety rotations are offered as well.

Teaching Opportunities

• Residents may have the option of participating in the University of Houston College of Pharmacy’s Teaching and Scholarship in Academia Program to earn a teaching certificate

  • Residents must obtain their preceptor license once eligible

Presentation Requirements

• Residency research project platform presentation
• ACPE-accredited seminar to provide continuing education to technicians or pharmacists
• Journal clubs and case presentations as assigned per rotation requirements
• Seminars for GME residents

Longitudinal Service

• Weekend distributive functions provide necessary training for the resident and are a requirement of the ASHP residency accreditation standard. During the residency year, residents work in various areas in the department including IV admixture, operations, and centralized and decentralized clinical coverage. The commitment is every other weekend with a weekday off.
• Various longitudinal projects such as a discharge counseling, quality improvement projects, an outcomes-based research project, and medication use evaluations.
