Residency Showcase Program Listings

The Master of Science and Postgraduate Years 1 and 2 (PGY1/PGY2) Residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration develops pharmacy leaders by providing the administrative and clinical skills necessary to lead a large health-system pharmacy or other healthcare organization in advancing patient care. We combine both a didactic and practical learning environment to train the pharmacy profession’s future leaders.

The PGY1 components of the program must be completed within the first 15 months of the combined residency. The PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates' competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.

Licensure and employment: Texas pharmacist licensure is required within 90 days of starting the program. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.

Master's Program:  

Each resident will earn a MS in Pharmacy Administration and Leadership through the University of Houston alongside Administrative Residents from other hospitals in the “Houston Program”. This platform allows residents to learn and experience innovations being implemented at the various hospitals throughout Houston and the largest medical center in the world.

Administrative Experiences:

• Supervise the employee internship program
• Develop/revise policies and procedures
• Manage process improvement initiatives
• Participate in both employee and resident recruitment and selection processes
• Lead the HMH pharmacy resident team in organizing Pharmacy Week activities
• Participate in administrative on-call duties

Staffing Experiences:

• Staffing every third weekend
• One evening shift every two weeks averaged over a four-week period starting in Year 2 of program
• Residents will work two holidays per year

Research Experiences:

• Each resident will plan, design and complete one major research project each year. One of these projects may serve as the Master’s research project or thesis.
• Research results are presented at the Alcalde Southwest Leadership Conference and/or the Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference, among other meetings.
• Residents will spearhead projects stemming from departmental initiatives.

Other Opportunities:

• Teaching Certificate Program through the University of Houston College of Pharmacy to promote scholarship in academia
• Attend monthly meetings with co-residents and program directors to discuss a variety of topics including patient cases, journal clubs, guidelines and leadership
• Present an ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education activity each year of the residency
