Program Purpose: The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This PGY1 program provides the resident with a solid foundation of experiences focusing on all aspects of inpatient care. We promote the development of a compassionate clinical pharmacy specialist, for the ever-changing healthcare landscape, through progressive clinical, managerial, and research experiences.

Residents will train at Houston Methodist Sugar Land, a full-service, acute care community hospital serving Fort Bend County and surrounding communities. In 2019, the institution had 17,799 admissions, boasting 356 beds, 24 operating rooms (OR), and 36 outpatient infusion chairs. The hospital has 3 pharmacies – Inpatient, OR and outpatient infusion. We have a longstanding history of recognition for excellence in patient care, medical advancements, and community involvement with achievements that include being one of the 100 Best Companies to Work for by Fortune magazine and ranked as one of the leading hospitals in the Houston area and in the state by the U.S. News & World Report, as no.5 in Houston and no.8 in Texas. In collaboration with our academic programs at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, residents will also be involved in various research and patient care-based projects, allowing for a fulfilling academic experience.

Licensure and employment: Texas pharmacist licensure is required within 90 days of starting the program. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.

• Ambulatory Care (emphasis in Oncology)

• Transitions of Care

Residents may also repeat any learning experiences in which they have a particular interest.

Longitudinal
Each resident can complete longitudinal activities in:

• ASHP Medication Safety Certificate
• Teaching and Scholarship in Academia Certificate Program - University of Houston College of Pharmacy

Staffing

• Staffing every other weekend in operational and clinical pharmacist roles
• Residents will work one major and one minor holiday

• Poster presentation at Vizient Resident Poster Session prior to ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
• Platform Presentation at Alcalde Southwest Leadership Conference and TSHP Conference

Project and Research Experience

• Cost savings initiatives
• Pharmacy medication safety and quality review initiatives
• Major research project with guidance of a preceptor and the Pharmacy Research Committee
• Medication use evaluation or quality analysis of existing protocols
