This program provides training, mentoring, and evaluation for pharmacists seeking additional education in a wide variety of ambulatory care areas, including primary care, cardiology, anticoagulation, diabetes/weight management, geriatrics, and transitions of care. At the beginning of the year, residents will follow a block schedule to develop the clinical skills needed to provide patient-focused care. In the second half of the year, residents will follow a longitudinal schedule to deliver pharmaceutical care in a variety of settings, leading to stronger relationships with patients and the healthcare team. The program's unique staffing component is focused on transitions of care, mainly at hospital discharge. The program provides experiences relevant to current health care needs and offers opportunities to effectively teach and evaluate the learning needs of pharmacy students.
The ultimate goal of our program is to develop pharmacists who are compassionate, competent, and professional clinicians who have the clinical, problem-solving, and leadership skills to deliver and enhance patient care services.
Our institution also offers a PGY2 in ambulatory care. The opportunity to early commit for this program is available.
Clinical Experience Curriculum This residency program is 52 weeks in duration. A two-week orientation period takes place at the beginning of the residency to orient residents to the site, program requirements, electronic medical record system, and more.
The first half of the residency curriculum is divided into rotation blocks of six-to-eight weeks. This allows concentrated time for residents to better understand workflows as well as develop the skills needed to perform effectively in each clinic. After forming this strong foundation, residents follow a longitudinal schedule in the spring, allowing them to follow patient outcomes long-term (each clinic will be allotted one half-day per week, except primary care, which will be allotted one full day per week). Throughout the year, residents will staff the inpatient transitions of care service on a rotating schedule of every third weekend.
Most of our clinics utilize a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner model, allowing pharmacists to make direct impacts on patient outcomes by prescribing and monitoring drug therapies. Residents are responsible for providing patient education, monitoring for drug-related problems, performing limited physical assessments, establishing therapeutic goals, and communicating with providers.
Clinic Sites: • Advanced Cardiac Care Clinic (ACCC) • Asheville Cardiology Associates (ACA) • Outpatient Anticoagulation Clinic • Diabetes/Weight Management • Medication Assistance Program (MAP) • Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) • Primary Care • Transitions of Care (TOC) Staffing • Value Based Care Learning Outside the Clinic In addition to their clinical rotation experiences, pharmacy residents at Mission further enhance their learning through variety of longitudinal didactic experiences. These experiences include anticoagulation didactics, Coffee Rounds, CUP (Catching Up on Pharmacy), Diabetes Didactics, Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), Mission LEAD, Primary Care Clinical Meeting (PCCM), and Teaching and Learning Curriculum (TLC). Residents complete research projects in a flipped research model, often focused on quality improvement needs in the health system, and present this research at regional and enterprise meetings. Public speaking expertise is enhanced by presentations throughout the year. The curriculum also offers opportunities for developing effective teaching skills through shared precepting responsibilities for pharmacy students in both early and advanced immersion experiences. Finally, residents give back through volunteering opportunities at ABCCM (Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry) and Diabetes Camp. The Asheville Experience It cannot be ignored that Mission Hospital is conveniently nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. Within a short drive, you can hike or bike to one of more than 300 waterfalls in Western NC or to 360-degree mountain-top views. We encourage you to visit the famous Biltmore Estate and enjoy the diverse food scene in cultural downtown Asheville!
We are using the ASHP-supported application portal, PhORCAS, for residency application submissions. Applications must include a letter of intent, CV, college/pharmacy school transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation using the standardized form on PhORCAS. *The application deadline for Mission Hospital is Friday, January 2, 2026*
The preference is to have residents licensed by the start of residency. Residents must be licensed within 90 days of starting the program.
