This program focuses on developing residents as valued members of the inpatient healthcare team, capable of practicing patient-centered pharmacotherapy in multiple environments. Over the last 30 years, graduates of this program completed residency well prepared for PGY2 specialty training or to work in a multitude of environments ranging from large health systems with high acuity, to smaller community-based hospitals, to academia and clinical faculty positions.
Throughout the PGY1 year, residents engage in a variety of clinical experiences tailored to their specific interests and goal. Pharmacy services at Mission Hospital are organized into service lines, and the learning experiences are precepted by clinical pharmacists with extensive knowledge in their designated disciplines. Decentralized clinical pharmacy staff promotes the development of collegial relationships amongst healthcare professionals, especially during multi-disciplinary rounds.
Mission Hospital pharmacists are entrusted with patient-centered medication decisions, such as pharmacokinetic dosing and autonomous management of warfarin, vancomycin, and phenytoin. As a resident at Mission, you can expect to see exceptional growth in your critical thinking skills, clinical judgment, leadership skills, and knowledge of the medication use process.
When the Student Becomes the Teacher Mission Hospital has a long-standing relationship with the Mountain Area Health and Education Center (MAHEC), Wingate University School of Pharmacy, ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy and the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. There are numerous opportunities to explore educational experiences such as precepting, lectures in a large group setting, small group facilitation, and careers in academia. Residents participate in a Teaching and Learning Curriculum with pharmacy residents from the region to dive deeper into concepts related to teaching. Formal public speaking expertise is also enhanced through the development and delivery of educational presentations throughout the year.
The Asheville Experience It cannot be ignored that Mission Hospital is conveniently nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. Within a short drive, you can hike or bike to one of more than 300 waterfalls in Western NC or to 360-degree mountain-top views. We encourage you to visit the famous Biltmore Estate and enjoy the diverse food scene in cultural downtown Asheville!
We are using the ASHP-supported application portal, PhORCAS, for residency application submissions. Applications must include a letter of intent, CV, college/pharmacy school transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation using the standardized form on PhORCAS. *The application deadline for Mission Hospital is Friday, January 2, 2026*
The preference is to have residents licensed by the start of residency. Residents must be licensed within 90 days of starting the program.
