Program Purpose: The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
This PGY1 program provides the resident with a solid foundation of experiences focusing on all aspects of inpatient care. We promote the development of a compassionate clinical pharmacy specialist, for the ever-changing healthcare landscape, through progressive clinical, managerial, and research experiences.
Residents will train at Houston Methodist West (HMW), a fast growing, acute-care, community hospital, that delivers the world?renowned Houston Methodist standard of high quality, advanced technology and personalized care to the West Houston and Katy communities. In 2024, HMW had 271 beds, 24 operating rooms (OR), and 25 intensive care unit (ICU) beds with a dedicated intensivist team. Additionally, HMW has a level III NICU (19 beds) and 39 private emergency treatment rooms, including 5 major trauma rooms. The hospital provides patient-focused and high-quality care as evidenced by its multiple awards and recognitions, including magnet recognition and the Exemplary Five Star Award from the Texas Department of State Health Services. In collaboration with our academic programs at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, residents will also be involved in various research and patient care-based projects, allowing for a fulfilling academic experience.
