The HMH PGY1 Pharmacy Residency for International Graduates (PGY1-IG) provides international pharmacist graduates the advanced knowledge, skills, and experiences of an ASHP-accredited residency program in preparation for a professional practice of distinction in their country of origin. Graduates of the PGY1-IG program will be qualified to assume advanced clinical pharmacist positions as entry-level departmental leaders or compete for PGY2 residency positions prior to returning to their country of origin.
Positions available: 2
Duration: 12 months, beginning mid-September. The program is designed with a start date and content to meet the unique needs of the international pharmacist graduate. The department of pharmacy will coordinate with Houston Methodist Global to assist perspective residents with immigration and visa requirements as needed.

Licensure and employment: Texas pharmacist licensure is required within 90 days of starting the program. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.

Core rotations: Cardiology, Critical Care, Drug Information/Formulary Management, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Research and Management, Continuity of Care, Community Hospital clinical service, Medication Safety
Elective rotations: Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Pharmacy Informatics, Psychiatry, Solid Organ Transplant
Staffing Experiences:
Staffing every third weekend and one evening every two weeks averaged over a four-week period
Residents will work one major and one minor holiday
Longitudinal Activities:
Plan, design, and complete a major research project with the guidance of a preceptor
Research results are presented at the Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference
Complete an additional quality improvement project
Present an ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education activity
Residents provide Code Blue coverage on critical and ED rotations and longitudinally during clinical coverage
Residents present research at the ASHP Annual conference as a poster

Attend committee meetings
Recruit for succeeding PGY1 pharmacy residents
Other Opportunities:
Teaching Certificate Program through the University of Houston College of Pharmacy to promote scholarship in academia
Attend meetings with co-residents and program directors to discuss a variety of topics including patient cases, journal clubs, guidelines and leadership
