The Louis A. Johnson VA Healthcare System Pharmacy Practice Residency was developed to provide a postgraduate learning experience in preparation for a career in pharmaceutical care. This residency program will focus attention on effective communication and education skills, development of clinical pharmacy programs and services, cost-effective formulary management strategies, and safe medication use within a health care system. This training will build upon knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities gained from an accredited professional pharmacy degree program. Specifically, the resident will be held responsible and accountable for acquiring these outcome competencies: managing and improving the medication-use process; providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams; exercising leadership and practice management; demonstrating project management skills; providing medication and practice-related education and training; and utilizing medical informatics.
