Program Description: 

This ASHP-accredited PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program is designed to provide an experience which will lead to the development of a practitioner with expert knowledge and skills in the area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy and antimicrobial stewardship.  The resident will be prepared for a career as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Diseases or Antimicrobial Stewardship.  The resident will be eligible for attainment of board certification in Infectious Diseases.

The PGY-2 Infectious Diseases Resident will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinical pharmacist specialists and WSU faculty to build upon their previous knowledge base and gain a well-rounded, yet focused experience in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. The PGY2 infectious diseases residency program will be tailored to the needs of the resident based on previous clinical experience.

Each resident is required to complete the core learning experiences set forth by the residency program (infectious diseases consult services at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Harper Hutzel Hospital, antimicrobial stewardship, pediatric ID at Children's Hospital of Michigan, microbiology experience, longitudinal HIV/ID outpatient clinic, research).  The resident is expected to participate in patient care rounds, antimicrobial stewardship activities, and longitudinal HIV clinic while developing their expertise in providing pharmaceutical care to a variety of patients.  In addition, the resident will provide leadership to PGY1 residents and doctor of pharmacy students, as well as participate in the development of clinical pathways and drug-use protocols for the hospital. The resident will be responsible for the completion of at least one research project of publishable quality with the results being presented at the Ohio Pharmacy Residency Conference.  Other opportunities available to the resident are the peer-review of articles submitted for publication, formulation and delivery of a continuing education (CE) lecture, as well as serving as moderator for a regional Infectious Diseases & Critical Care Symposium sponsored by the DMC in conjunction with the WSU Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS). 

Pharmacy Services: 

The Department of Pharmacy Services at DRH provides decentralized, 24 hour, full service to all areas of the hospital. All patients admitted to DRH receive clinical pharmacotherapy monitoring. In addition to their participation on the infectious diseases consult service and antimicrobial stewardship activities the infectious diseases pharmacy resident will work as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including but not limited to therapeutic drug monitoring, therapeutic anticoagulation, drug information and emergency code team participation.

Detroit Receiving Hospital (DRH) is a 300 bed hospital, and is Michigan’s first Level I Trauma Center. DRH hosts one of the busiest and most well-equipped emergency departments anywhere. The oldest and largest verified burn center in the state is at DRH, and is one of only 63 in the country. DRH offers expertise in many specialty services, including emergency medicine and trauma, critical care, diabetes, geriatrics, infectious diseases, neurosciences, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. DRH shares a campus with Harper-Hutzel Hospital (HHH), Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM), the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM), and the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS). DRH serves as a major teaching site for medical, pharmacy, and nursing students; medical residents; and fellows.
