The PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in Critical Care at Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a 12-month program accredited by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). One applicant is accepted per year. Successful completion of the program will prepare the resident for critical care pharmacy or academic positions, as well as the competency to attain Board Certification in Critical Care Pharmacy.

At SHC, the resident will receive valuable critical care experience at a cutting edge, teaching hospital and Level I Trauma Center. With 100 ICU and 613 total licensed beds, over 80,000 emergency room visits annually, and more than 30,000 inpatient admissions each year, we offer a challenging, diverse caseload in multiple ICU settings.

Program Objectives

The purpose of the residency is to build on the Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency to produce a confident and independent practitioner capable of providing excellent care to the critically ill. Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will:

  1. Provide optimal clinical care to critically ill patients
  2. Function as an effective member of the health care team
  3. Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community about effective and safe medication use
  4. Develop excellent written and verbal communication skills
  5. Demonstrate time management and problem-solving skills
  6. Become a leader within the pharmacy profession

Program Structure

The Critical Care Specialty Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program follows the ASHP Residency Learning System (RLS) and its goals and learning objectives are consistent with standards developed by ASHP.

Required Rotations

  • Orientation/Training (2 weeks)
  • Medical ICU (8 weeks)
  • Surgical ICU/Trauma Surgery (4 weeks)
  • ICU II (4 weeks)
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Neurocritical Care (4 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine (4 weeks)
  • Clinical Research/Administrative (4 weeks)

Elective Rotation (12 weeks)

  • Cardiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Heart-Lung Transplant
  • Kidney-Liver Transplant
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Nephrology
  • Pain Service
  • Hematology-Oncology
 

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Active participation in interdisciplinary patient care rounds
  • Participate in advanced cardiac life support resuscitations
  • Completion of a critical care research project presented at the Northern California Society of Critical Care Medicine Spring Meeting
  • Participate in educating pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff as well as PGY-1 pharmacy residents and students
  • Teaching certificate program (optional)
  • Prepare and present a critical care related drug monograph for the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee
  • Participate in critical care related committee(s) to impact policies
  • Staff 1 weekend every 3 weeks in the ICU pharmacy satellite
