DESCRIPTION

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) provides a structured and advanced education and training experience that prepares its graduates to successfully practice in various patient care positions, faculty appointments, or further post-doctoral pharmacy training.  

We have 4 PGY1 pharmacy residency positions and offer a variety of core and elective learning experiences.  Residents are mentored by outstanding preceptors who are committed to patient care and the training of new practitioners. 

Our program has 15 years of experience in training and preparing our residents for the next step of their careers.  Prior residents have moved on to accept a wide variety of PGY2 residencies, fellowships, clinical and unit-based pharmacist positions as well as faculty positions.  

Program Structure

The residency program permits residents to gain experience and sufficient practice with diverse patient populations, a variety of disease states, and a range of patient problems.

• Residents will be scheduled for 10 core concentrated learning experiences and 2 elective learning experiences of their choice. 
• Four core longitudinal learning experiences take place throughout the residency year, ranging from 9 to 12 months each, to provide additional learning opportunities and continuity.
• Two elective longitudinal learning experiences are chosen which run 5 months each. Alternatively, the resident may choose to continue their first elective longitudinal for the duration of the 10 months.
• The service component utilizes a unique pharmacy staffing model consisting of 1 weekend per month (8 hours/day x 2 days) and 1 evening weekday shift per week (4 hours/evening) to provide a wide exposure to differing staffing responsibilities and promote resident well being and work-life balance.

Baseline assessments and resident interests are used to formulate the resident’s learning experience schedule. Every effort is made to accommodate a schedule established on the knowledge base, experience, and preferences of the resident.

CERTIFICATIONS

Specialized education and training is provided to allow the resident to earn the below certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Teaching & Learning Certificate Program via the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University

PROJECT

Each resident conducts a practice advancement project to improve pharmacy practice, clinical care, patient safety, healthcare operations, or to investigate gaps in knowledge related to patient care.

• The resident will gain experience in project planning, protocol/education development, data collection, data analysis, and presentation/publication of the results.  
• A project mentor serves to guide the resident and provide clinical expertise and biostatistician support is available.
• Projects will be presented at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Eastern States Residency Conference and Hackensack Meridian Health's Quality Improvement Day/Research Day.
• There is opportunity to prepare a manuscript of the final research project for publication.

MENTOR

Each resident will select a preceptor as their residency mentor for the year. The mentor will meet with the resident routinely and will provide guidance to the resident as needed. The mentor shall assess the ability of the resident to meet the requirements and work with the resident to assure satisfactory completion. The mentor also oversees and facilitates the quarterly development plan review meetings for that resident.

ACADEMIA

The academic affiliation with the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University allows residents to gain exposure to various aspects of academia that may include but are not limited to:

• Teaching a didactic lecture or skills lab
• Co-precepting pharmacy students on rotation
• Small group instruction in patient counseling, physical assessment, and sterile compounding
• Manuscript reviews

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A variety of outreach events in diverse settings are available to educate our community such as: stroke and cardiac support groups, senior center education, high school programs, and township fairs/booths.

HOSPITAL COMMITTEES

Residents select interdisciplinary hospital committees to serve as standing members throughout the year. They attend alongside a preceptor and contribute to the meeting discussions, tasks and follow up.

APPLYING TO OUR PROGRAM:

Jersey Shore University Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency participates in PhORCAS and adheres to the rules of the National Matching Service.

To be considered for a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the applicant must:

• Be a Pharm.D. graduate of an ACPE-accredited college of Pharmacy by July 1.
• Be eligible for licensure as a registered pharmacist in the state of NJ. You are expected to be licensed in the state of NJ by July 31, but no later than October 1.
• Provide identification of US Citizenship or Permanent Residence Status.
• Be enrolled in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Residency Matching Program. Applicants may register for the matching program via www.natmatch.com/ashprmp.
• Submit the required materials in PhORCAS by the January 5 deadline.
  
  

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS:

Curriculum Vitae – A current copy of your curriculum vitae is required. Your curriculum vitae should include the colleges and/or universities attended (including dates), degrees conferred or expected, professional experiences, rotation/clerkship experiences, extracurricular leadership experiences, and other academic and professional achievements.

Letter of Interest – A letter of interest should include short-term and long-term professional goals, motivation for residency training, and why you are interested in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Residency Program.

Transcripts – Official pharmacy school transcript(s) for all post-secondary pharmacy coursework must be submitted. Candidates must have graduated from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy with a Doctorate of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.

Letters of Recommendation – Three letters of recommendation are required.

A formal interview with the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Pharmacy Residency Program team is required for program consideration.

The ASHP Matching Program results are announced in March. If you match with our program, you will receive an offer letter within 30 days.
