The Good Samaritan Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy residency program is an American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited 12-month curriculum designed to provide residents the opportunity to garner experience beyond the entry-level education of a doctor of pharmacy degree. The calendar year consists of seven required and four elective rotations, as well as longitudinal experiences and strategically placed project weeks. The required rotations include: ambulatory care, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious disease, internal medicine, and orientation. The resident can choose 4 elective rotations from the following list: bone marrow transplant & cellular therapy, cardiology, ambulatory endocrinology, hematology/oncology, neurovascular intensive care, pharmacogenomics, psychiatric/neurologic medicine, neonatal intensive care, pharmacy informatics, population health, women's health/obstetrics. Five longitudinal experiences are required, and they include administration, emergency code response, pharmacy service/staffing, residency research project, teaching and education. Residents will work with the residency program director to establish an individualized learning goal plan consistent with his or her career goals. Additional opportunities for research, teaching, and professional travel are in place. Resident activities include but are not limited to: interdisciplinary rounds on nearly all direct patient-care rotations, opportunities for in-service, journal club, continuing education presentations, precepting pharmacy students, major research project, travel to national and regional conferences, University of Cincinnati teaching certificate program, and committee experience. Good Samaritan offers an early-commit process for PGY1 residents to the PGY2 Internal Medicine program at Good Samaritan Hospital as well as the PGY2 Cardiology program at TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital. Good Samaritan Hospital is the oldest and largest private teaching and specialty healthcare facility with a total of 502 beds in the Greater Cincinnati area, and provides a variety of quality services. The clinical pharmacists at Good Samaritan Hospital have an excellent relationship with the physicians' group. “I’ve seen how having a clinical pharmacist on our rounding team transforms care. Their expertise in Evidence Based Medicine not only improves patient outcomes but also elevates the training of our IM residents. I tell my residents: I can't round without my pharmacist. We deliver safer, smarter, and more effective care together” - Dr. Angel Mena, MD, FACP Program Director, Good Samaritan Internal Medicine Residency Program
