Wellstar MCG Health (formerly AU Medical Center) provides a 12-month ASHP-accredited PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Pharmacy Residency,. The Wellstar MCG Health Augusta post-graduate experience provides comprehensive training in acute care, ambulatory care, specialty/community pharmacy, infusion, long term care, drug information, med-use policy development, practice management, teaching, research and leadership at a tertiary care academic medical center.  In August 2026, Wellstar MCG is opening a 100-bed community teaching hospital in nearby Columbia County, providing an additional unique experience for the PGY2 resident in 2026-2027! 

This program has been established to train the future leaders of our profession by providing them with the tools and knowledge to lead patient-centered care in a dynamic health care environment.  The PGY2 year is focused on pharmacy administration and leadership, however, residents are also appointed as an unpaid postdoctoral fellow at UGA College of Pharmacy and have the option to earn an advanced Teaching Certificate.

Program highlights:

• Supervisory experience over a pharmacy team longitudinally (all year) with preceptor support
• Medication Safety, 340B, Infusion Center, Specialty Pharmacy, Pharmacy Informatics, Inpatient Operations, Clinical Operations, financial and executive leadership 
• Committee Participation (Pharmacy Leadership, Drug Shortages, P&T Committee, Medication Safety Committee)
• Performance Improvement 
• Investigational Drug Services/ Clinical Research Pharmacy/ IRB
• Inpatient pharmacy staffing coverage weekends
• Teaching and precepting for UGA College of Pharmacy 

The flexibility of the residency design allows residents to individualize the program to meet their specific needs and interests.

A PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates' competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory and leadership responsibilities.  Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership.  The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills.

Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.

This accredited program is graduating its 3rd PGY1/PGY2 with MBA resident this spring, with a team that embraces its long tradition of high-quality, impactful residency training.

Our PGY1 residency has been ASHP-accredited since 1975 (originally under the facility name Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics and MCG Health, Inc.). We have almost 50 years of residency graduates who are making a difference every day!

Applicants for the Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center-University of Georgia College of Pharmacy residencies must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in Georgia at the start of the residency.   (Candidates must be current PGY1 or have completed a PGY1 pharmacy residency.)
